Foundation usually separates when formulas clash—like a silicone-based primer or SPF under a water-based foundation—or when too many heavy layers sit on skin. Check labels and keep “like with like” (water with water, silicone with silicone).
Another culprit is sunscreen or skincare not fully absorbed, which causes pilling and patchiness as you apply makeup. Apply from lightest to heaviest, allow each layer to dry, and use less product.
Excess oil, sweat, and humid weather can also break foundation apart midday, especially if the formula isn’t matched to your skin type. Opt for long-wear bases, blot oil, and set with powder or spray.
If it happens with a specific Essence product, test it alone with your usual foundation to spot incompatibilities. Swap in a compatible primer or lighter SPF, then set and refresh as needed.
